One of the most challenging aspects of this technique is proper patient selection. In this study we reviewed available knowledge, differential diagnosis, and strategies utilized for the management of patients who were considered for a neurostimulation procedure. Clinical and neurological evaluation, complete diagnostic workup, a behavioral assessment, and a screening trial are all essential to determine a patient’s suitability for SCS implantation. A correct diagnosis and proper indications will help to achieve optimal treatment results and improve quality of life for a considerable number of patients suffering from intractable pain.
